In our thesis we investigated how the shear rate and the overconsolidation ratio (OCR)
influence the measured shear strength in the direct shear apparatus. Shear tests were
performed also by comparing the influence of low and higher vertical normal stress as well as
the temporary breakage during shearing to the test results. The test samples were taken
from the temporary lagoons, where the dredged mud from the Port of Koper has been stored.
The tests performed to identify the physical properties of the mud included determination of:
water content, Atterberg limits, particle density, particle size distribution and water adsorption
by Enslin Neff. We found that the the shear rate and the overconsolidation ratio have a large
influence on the measured shear strenght in the direct shear apparatus.
