Once wood windows are installed, they are highly exposed to weathering (rain, sun); therefore, the correct choice of a quality wood coating system at the window manufacturing is of a key importance. We tested coatings of 4 different manufacturers. We determined the resistance of stains and opaque pigmented coatings on spruce and meranti wood for stackability, against the formation of bright whitish spots upon exposure to water and their tendency to chalk with age. We found out that none of the tested coatings fully met the selected requirements, hence the window manufacturer will have to accept a compromise at a coating selection.
