In the company which produces chairs and tables, we encountered the problem of appearance of defects during the surface finishing process, which were not only related to the work and materials used in the Wood Finishing Department. Due to the fact that the number of the defects had increased recently it was necessary to record the type of defects and the frequency of their emergence, to find the reasons for them and to suggest how to eliminate or correct them. Over the period of one month, the type and the number of defects occurring in the Wood Finishing Department were monitored daily. It was found out that the variety of defects occurred on approximately seven percent of products. The results obtained proved that cracks in the wood occurred most frequently. We suggest that the defects should be eliminated, if possible, where they first appear, i.e. in different sections during the technological process and not only at the end, during surface treatment, when the defects are made evident. It would be possible to eliminate some defects before surface treatment is carried out, so the work in the Wood Finishing Department would not be impeded as much as it is at present. All the measures which were taken after the monitoring have contributed to the decrease of defects in the Wood Finishing Department.
