Housing is analysed as a component of the quality of life. Its relevant attributes are defined and analysed. It is argued that it is not only the physical qualities such as amenities and the size of housing which are important, but also the individual's control over housing and his safety, which constitute the housing tenure. These attributes of housing arerecently gaining recognition particularly through definition and enforcement of the right to adequate housing as a human right. The article presents empirical data on different elements of housing quality of the Slovenian population and some international comparisons. Also a comparison between years 1984 and 1994 is made to evaluate some of the impacts of the 'transition' on the housing sphere.
