Slovenian wood processing firms use many different computer programmes to design their products, most frequently: AutoCAD, MegaCAD and MegaTISCHLER. The time needed to design a certain component of a specific chest of drawers was researched. 70 people participated in the study, 54 of them being students of Biotechnical Faculty, Department of Wood Science and Technology, and 16 actually using those tools at work in various Slovenian wood processing firms. Participants were divided into 4 different groups according to their skill levels. The data analysis showed that MegaTISCHLER was by far the simplest and fastest programme. The employees finished drawing almost 3-times as fast as the unskilled students; on average they did it in no more than 9 min, while students completed their tasks in 23 min. The data show that the velocity of designing products with these tools mainly depends on experience and the everyday use of the programmes. The employees were also the quickest to finish the exercise with other 2 computer programmes, but the time difference was not as big as it was when using the MegaTISCHLER programme.
