Changes in the security environment after the end of Cold War have seriously affected our security concepts and paradigms. Human security was finally conceptualized and presented to the global public in a Human Development Report in 1994. The concept has evolved since then and, today, we can identify quite a number of seriously conceptualized definitions and theoretical approaches that have led to the formation of a number of practical attempts to provide it. This concept is theoretically rather well substantiated, attractive and modern. It seems that it is the concept of the future for interpreting and approaching most of security situations as it integrates human rights, security and sustainable development. It puts an accent on the individual - the most significant and vulnerable part of society. However, the concept and practice of human security face some seriouschallenges that need to be identified, analysed and explained to relevant professional and political publics if we want to achieve an optimal approach to human security situations and effective implementation of human security preventive and reactive measures. The goal of this article is to identify some key challenges in conceptualizing human security. Discussed challenges stem from the lack of conceptual coherence, lack of interdisciplinary approaches and cooperation, lack of joint methodology, mistaken perception that the content of human security is something entirely new, understated importance of finding the appropriate balance between human security and other human rights, neglecting the technical foundation of human security and the problem of subjectivity in threat perception. The author analyses these problems and proposes solutions for the human security theory, aiming to optimize the concept of human security itself
