The thesis presents a practical example of the design of different measures for improving bearing capacity of poor bearing subsoil and for reducing and accelerating the subsoil settlement under road embankment. The embankment was planned on a section of the motorway Koper – Dragonja, passing through Vanganel valley, which is covered with alluvial deposits. Based on field and laboratory tests we determined the geological and geotechnical conditions of the section. We calculated settlements and the time required for soil consolidation and analyzed subsoil stability. Two different possible combinations of the most suitable measures were described. The first was the execution of vertical drains and lateral embankments, while the second was the placement of stone columns. For both alternatives, basic properties and methods of calculation were addressed. The proposed measures were dimensioned for ensuring proper stability and accelerating the consolidation process within the established one year time
frame.
