The origin and development of diplomacy is closely connected with the territorialization of social communities. Their different form in various historical situations has therefore determined a concrete form of diplomatic appearance. Four significant epochs cover this development: early, classical, modern and postmodern diplomacy. A differentia specifica for distinguishing among them are the categories of territory and of socio-functional closeness. In the development of diplomacy one could observe intensified progressive dynamics of its forms, methods and new topics as well as simultaneous time shortening of these phases. Postmodern diplomacy is a structural upgrade of previous forms and is closely linked to processes of both deterritorializationand dehierachisation. The European integration process is among the key indicators of interdependence, which is becoming the foundation of international relations in the era of globalization.
