The transition from a gifted student to an adult is a complex process that can significantly
shape various aspects of an individual’s development and life course. Gifted individuals are
typically characterized by above-average abilities, which give rise to unique experiences and
specific challenges throughout their lives. Nevertheless, the subjective experience of being
identified as gifted remains under-researched. The purpose of this study was to examine
how individuals perceive the role of being identified as gifted in childhood in shaping their
identity, educational and career paths, social relationships, and subjective well-being. The
study included 14 emerging adults who had been identified as gifted in primary school. Data
were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The
results highlight the complexity and ambivalence of the experience of being identified and
labeled as "gifted." While some individuals report neutral experiences and perceive no major
impact on their development, others report both positive and negative outcomes. The most
prominent positive aspects include the validation of abilities and opportunities to recognize
and develop one’s potential, while the negative aspects include high expectations, the
experience of external and internal pressures to achieve excellence, and social alienation. As
they transition into adulthood, participants come to understand the crucial importance of
effort and work ethic for their own success and develop an integrated perspective on their
experiences, viewing the label of giftedness as just one component of their overall identity.
The findings offer in-depth insight into the subjective experience of the advantages and
challenges associated with being identified as gifted and contribute to a better
understanding of its long-term significance for an individual’s personal and social
development. This work is of practical value to educators, parents, and professionals in
formulating practical guidelines and developing support strategies to provide comprehensive
support to gifted individuals.
