In my thesis, I examine the play An Event in the Town of Goga, approaching it through psychoanalysis as a theoretical tool of interpretation. Drawing on Freudian psychoanalysis, which was developing during the period in which the literary work was written, I explore the issues of trauma and the unconscious, both embedded in a sense of content-related “eternity” and “timelessness.” I consider the unconscious as the primary site of trauma, while positioning art itself as the second site. Within the first setting and its cyclical temporality, I examine the characters’ entrapment within both dimensions. I am also interested in the role of the central figure, the bearer of the trauma, as well as the distinctive characteristics of the supporting characters, each of whom, in their own way, reflects specific neuroses and awaits the Event.
