This thesis analyzes the social and class status of characters in key works of Slovenian literature from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century. It pays particular attention to the dichotomy between the city and the village as narrative settings, while the conclusion focuses on the fate of female characters as the Other within the social and economic context of a patriarchal society. The analysis is based on the following prose works: Deseti brat (Josip Jurčič), Na klancu (Ivan Cankar), Hlapec Jernej (Ivan Cankar), Cvetje v jeseni (Ivan Tavčar), and Jamnica (Prežihov Voranc). Through a comparative reading of these texts, I examine how the social and class status of individual characters shifts in relation to their educational background, inheritance, and living conditions, while also investigating the factors influencing these changes. In addition, I determine the contextual role of the city and the village in these transformations and analyse the position and role of female characters within the narratives.
