In this thesis, we have explored and systematically presented the process of designing, preparing, and creating a 3D character ready for animation in Blender. Developing an animated character represents a complex process that combines technical knowledge, an understanding of three-dimensional space, and creative design within the 3D animation production pipeline. The purpose of this thesis was to examine the entire workflow, from the conceptual design of the character to its functional realization in an animated environment.
In the theoretical part, we addressed fundamental concepts of 3D space, basic principles of digital modeling, and various techniques essential for creating a high-quality 3D character. We paid particular attention to topology, texturing, UV unwrapping, the use of texture maps, and the principles of rigging. We explained both Forward Kinematics and Inverse Kinematics methods, including their advantages and limitations, which allowed us to understand how motion is transferred to the character mesh. Additionally, we presented the concept of weight painting in detail and its role in controlling mesh deformation. The theoretical part serves as a professional foundation that supports the practical work and provides a universal basis for understanding 3D modeling and animation techniques.
In the practical part, we described the development of an original 3D character, presenting step by step the modeling, topology optimization, material creation, and preparation of the character for animation. Special emphasis was placed on rigging, which represents the most technically demanding part of the process, as it enables correct skeletal movement and natural mesh deformation. We explained all design decisions, the choice of techniques, and the use of tools, as well as testing and adjustments throughout the process. The final animated sequence demonstrates the successful execution of the project and verifies the character’s functionality in an animated environment.
The entire process allowed us to develop a comprehensive understanding of all stages of 3D character creation and the connection between theoretical principles and practical implementation. This work emphasizes the importance of systematic preparation, consistent application of standard techniques, and thoughtful integration of creative and technical processes to achieve a high-quality and functional animated result.
