In the paper, I discuss colour as a physical phenomenon, an artistic material, and an artistic element, and I focus on different methods of colour mixing.
I research the history of the use of transparent paper, how it is made, and its mass production. I distinguish different types of transparent paper according to their physical characteristics, use, and method of production. I describe the works of Milena Gregorčič and Tina Konec, Slovenian artists who use a lot of transparent materials in their work, including tracing paper.
In the practical part of the assignment, I describe my method of working with oil pastels: I construct paintings by layering painted sheets of tracing paper. When placed in front of a light source (window), the paintings are assembled into one and the colours of the different layers mix. I analyse the colour mixing in detail and determine the possibilities and limitations of the chosen artistic technique. When painting, I limit myself to working with three primary colours.
The motif of my paintings is a bus stop. In my work, the technique of layering transparent paper allows me to explore different ways of depicting moving crowds, people, their shadows, and reflections.
