The thesis examines the process of developing, designing and producing packaging for a series of board games from the perspectives of functionality, aesthetics and sustainability. Packaging is a key component of a product, as it not only serves as a protective function but also influences the product's perceived value and consumers' purchasing decisions. The theoretical part of the thesis presents the fundamental characteristics of packaging, different types of packaging used for board games, contemporary design trends and the role of sustainable materials and approaches within the board game industry.
The experimental part of the thesis focused on selecting appropriate materials and analysing their physical and mechanical properties. Three materials were examined: two types of cardboard (V1 and V2) and one type of paperboard (V3). The results showed that paperboard exhibited the best mechanical properties, particularly tear resistance, making it suitable for the construction of the outer packaging. Both cardboard samples proved suitable for producing internal inserts, with sample V1 exhibiting slightly better properties than sample V2.
Based on the material analysis, a packaging series for four board games was developed, with particular attention given to the functional arrangement of elements, a unified structural form, and dimensional adaptability. An unconventional book-shaped packaging solution was designed to enable easier storage and visual consistency across the product line. The graphic design is minimalist, employing consistent typography, line illustrations, and a limited colour palette, thereby contributing to the recognizability of the “Edicija Omahen” series.
The results of the thesis demonstrate that using environmentally friendly materials alongside thoughtful design principles can produce packaging that is functional, visually appealing, and sustainable, while simultaneously meeting the contemporary demands of the board game market.
