This master's thesis addresses social work with immigrant families who have a child with
special needs. When integrating into a new
environment, immigrant families often face linguistic, social, economic, and administrative
barriers, which may also affect access to services for a child with special needs. The purpose
of the thesis is to explore how social workers in developmental outpatient clinics with early
intervention centres identify the needs of these families, what challenges they encounter when
supporting the child and the family, how they overcome these challenges, which
competencies they need for this work, and which areas should be improved at the systemic
level.
