The purpose of the master's thesis was to determine, based on a literature review, the impact of using an electric bicycle on physiological parameters and what is the level of intensity and load when cycling on an electric bicycle. Among other things, we also wanted to determine whether cycling on an electric bicycle can achieve the WHO recommendations regarding physical activity.
We conducted a systematic literature review, a total of seventeen articles, which referred to the use of an electric bicycle as a means of active transportation to work and as a means of recreation and general health improvement.
The study was thus divided into two parts of the review; active transportation and general impact on health. In the reviewed studies, the intensity of riding an electric bicycle ranged from low to high intensity levels with different load values. Riding an electric bicycle has a smaller impact on physiological variables compared to riding a conventional bicycle or riding without electrical support, but still has a sufficient impact on health.
Based on a literature review, we concluded that the electric bicycle is a versatile means of transportation that can help, especially for inactive, sedentary, older individuals, achieve WHO recommendations and bring health benefits.
