Intermodal transport represents an important component of modern logistics and transport systems, as it enables the efficient integration of different modes of transport, such as maritime, rail and road transport. By using a single transport unit, most commonly a container, intermodal transport contributes to greater efficiency of transport chains, reduced costs, shorter transit times and a reduction in negative environmental impacts. Owing to increasing globalisation and growing freight volumes, intermodal transport is becoming one of the key directions in the development of the logistics industry. The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to present the development and significance of intermodal transport and to analyse its role within maritime logistics. Particular emphasis is placed on the connection between seaports and inland transport routes, as well as on the organisation of door-to-door transport services. The thesis examines the case of CMA CGM, which has evolved from a traditional container shipping company into an integrated logistics service provider, with a particular focus on the development of rail and road intermodal solutions. The thesis is based on an analysis of scientific and professional literature, a review of existing intermodal practices, and a case study of the selected company. The methods of analysis, description and synthesis are employed to present the advantages, disadvantages and challenges associated with the further development of intermodal transport. The findings indicate that intermodal transport plays a crucial role in enhancing the competitiveness of logistics providers and in achieving the sustainability objectives of modern transport systems.
