Izvleček
One of the most important elements limiting primary production is nitrogen. Increased anthropogenic inputs of mineral nitrogen for food production significantly affect the composition and activity of microbial communities in the soil and, through this, microbially-mediated processes in the global nitrogen cycle. Increased nitrogen inputs accelerate nitrification in the soil, leading to higher nitrate concentrations, which can leach into the groundwater or enter the denitrification process. Nitrification and incomplete denitrification are the main sources of emissions of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O), whose concentration in the atmosphere is increasing due to modern agriculture and industrialization, combined with its long lifetime. In addition to the important environmental aspect, the leaching of nitrate and emissions of nitrous oxide also represent an undesirable loss of nitrogen from agricultural systems, which reduces the efficiency of its use for food production. Applications for directing the biological processes of the nitrogen cycle with the aim of efficient use of added nitrogen are and will continue to be an important area of future research. The purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive overview of both recent and established findings on soil nitrogen cycle processes and the characteristics of the microbial communities that mediate them.
