The master's thesis addresses the design of a new centre for the settlement of Moste in Žirovnica. The starting point of the thesis is the observation that the area under consideration lacks high-quality public space for meeting, lingering, and connecting residents, while the role of the centre is increasingly shifting towards the newly emerging business zone. The thesis is based on the assumption that such a space is not suitable for forming the centre of the settlement and that another location should therefore be found.
The theoretical part discusses the concepts of spatial identity, genius loci, the mental image of a settlement, and the design of public space and squares, with particular emphasis on public spaces of a rural character. This is followed by a presentation of selected reference examples and an analytical section, which includes spatial analyses of the wider and narrower area of the settlement of Moste in Žirovnica. Based on these analyses, the key spatial characteristics of the settlement are identified, helping to shape the settlement centre in the project part.
The project part proposes the transformation of the area around the Church of St Martin into a new village centre, conceived as an interweaving of sacred and residential space, an area of central activities, and public space. The design includes the formation of three smaller village squares, which together establish a new community focal point. The proposed arrangement strengthens local identity, preserves the scale of the rural environment, and offers high-quality public space for different age and social groups.
