Diphtheria is a contagious disease that primarily affects children and, due to its high mortality rate among them, was also referred to as the “angel of death”. This Master’s thesis examines the issue of diphtheria in Slovenia during the 19th and 20th centuries through the lens of Slovenian and German newspapers. It focuses on analysing how various discourses (medical, social, political, etc.) influenced public opinion. The research is based on a critical analysis of secondary literature, published sources, and newspaper articles, with the aim of examining the media representation of diphtheria and attitudes towards the disease. The thesis highlights the role of newspapers in shaping perceptions of diphtheria and society's response to its outbreaks.
