This master's thesis deals with Cuban literature from the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The novels discussed by three authors living outside Cuba were selected because they have been translated into Slovenian. Chanel Cleeton (Cuando salí de Cuba, 2023), Karla Suárez (Silencios, 1999) and Zoé Valdés (Te di la vida entera, 1996) intertwine themes of the revolution, the postrevolution, Havana and Cuba in general in their works. I begin by presenting the literature of exile, its causes and characteristics. The Cuban Revolution (1953–1959) was a process that triggered numerous changes in Cuba on various levels: political, social, economic and cultural. It led to the emigration of many artists to the United States of America and Europe. The following chapter offers an overview of Cuban literature in exile in the 21st century, which continues with the presentation and analysis of the works of the three selected authors.
This master’s thesis addresses the following research questions:
What themes and motifs do the authors use?
Do they remain faithful to historical facts?
What writing style do they use?
Finally, I briefly present the conclusions and compare how each of the authors perceives the situation in Cuba from abroad, and I also identify common elements of the novels discussed.
