The experiment was conducted in an unheated greenhouse on the experimental field of the Department of Agronomy at the Biotechnical Faculty in Ljubljana. We studied whether different transplanting dates and different varieties of green onions affect the yield and quality parameters at harvest. We grew green onion seedlings from purchased seeds. When they were ready for transplanting, we transplanted them into a soil in an unheated greenhouse on three dates (11.10, 25.10, 6.11.2024). On each date, which represented one treatment, we had 5 replicates of each variety of green onion. During the growing season, we fertilized the green onion crop once with nitrogen fertilizer and watered it with micro-sprinklers as needed. We harvested the entire crop on 24.4.2025. Then we measured the quality parameters in the laboratory of the Department of Fruit Growing, Viticulture, and Horticulture. We measured the weight of the whole plant (g), the weight of the cleaned plant (g), the diameter of the bulb (mm), the diameter of the bulb neck (mm), and the dry matter content (%). After processing the data, we found that the date and variety affect both the time it takes for green onions to reach technological maturity and the yield. The yields and measured quality parameters of the first and second transplanting dates differed statistically significantly from the third date. However, there were no statistically significant differences between the first two dates. Both October transplanting dates yielded a high-quality and good quantitatively harvest of green onions. For serious green onion production, it is advisable to plan the sowing schedule.
