The project of the master’s thesis deals with a programme of comprehensive rehabilitation of people with multiple sclerosis, in the area of the old ward of the hospital Topolšica, called Smrečina, in Topolšica near Šoštanj.
The programme and its design are based on the desire to provide people with multiple sclerosis and their families with a holistic rehabilitation treatment - this includes a programme of physical activities and therapies, as well as psychological rehabilitation and support.
The design and programming of the project, set close to nature and spruce forests, offers a tranquil space for treatment and rehabilitation.
The programme is based on physiotherapy and psychological support; physical activities, occupational therapy, electromagnetic therapy, aquatic therapies and therapies in the field of fine motor improvement help to improve the physical condition and well-being of the patients, making it easier for them to cope with the daily symptoms of their illness and the tasks they have in their lives. At the same time, learning how to maintain good physical condition and health helps to slow down the progress of multiple sclerosis in patients.
Mental health support from psychologists, psychiatrists and education and support for all family members, is another cornerstone of the programme; more than half of people diagnosed with MS experience depression as a result of coping with an insidious disease, and much support and information is also needed from family members and carers.
Part of the centre’s public programme is also open to the general public, connecting visitors to the centre with the community.
