The minimalist literature greatly marked the development of the short story in Slovenia in the 1980s and in the 1990s. As a literary phenomenon, minimalism had been thoroughly researched in Slovenia up until the short prose of Nejc Gazvoda from the mid-2000s. After this period, however, minimalism in Slovenian literature is yet to be researched. The aim of this thesis is to examine whether Ana Svetel’s short stories can be discussed within the context of minimalism on the basis of the short prose of the aforementioned author, who belongs to the youngest generation. In this thesis, minimalism is used as an analytical tool for which the theoretical conception relies mainly on Andreja Perić Jezernik’s monography Minimalism and Modern Slovenian Short Prose. The analysis focuses especially on differentiating between minimalism and minimalization and establishes that the works of Ana Svetel are minimalistic in the ideological and theoretical sense and sometimes introduce minimalizations, but not to such a degree that they could be defined as minimalistic. The results of the research simultaneously reveal the presence of minimalistic procedures in the most modern Slovenian short prose despite the general decline of texts that are clearly minimalistic and of research regarding literary minimalism in Slovenia.
