In this master’s thesis, we provide an overview of the current state of enterprise networks and data centers, and present the challenges that can be addressed through the use of virtual overlay networks. The thesis focuses on two key technologies. SPBm, which operates at the data link layer, and EVPN combined with VXLAN, which operates at the network layer. We examine how these technologies function, how encapsulation is performed, and what advantages they offer compared to traditional networking technologies used in local area networks. Furthermore, two network environments based on equipment from different vendors are deployed, both supporting these technologies. Within these environments, Layer 2 and Layer 3 services are implemented to interconnect end devices and subnets. In the final part, the two technologies are compared, and their respective advantages and disadvantages are analyzed.
