The thesis examines the construction rules for vessels operating in polar regions, where climate change and the melting of sea ice are opening new shipping routes in the Arctic. The Polar Code is presented with its classification of vessels and the fundamental requirements for their safe operation. The central part of the thesis focuses on the rules of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), with emphasis on hull reinforcements, calculation of ice loads, material selection, and corrosion protection. Finally, the thesis highlights the specific challenges of navigation in ice-covered waters and underlines the importance of safety and technical measures for sustainable shipping in polar regions.
