The thesis presents, based on written sources, the history of the late Roman defense system Claustra Alpium Iuliarum, which was created in the 3rd and 4th centuries and ceased to function in the 5th century, mainly due to lack of personel and political instability. The main task of this system was to control important transport routes that led from the Eastern Alpine region towards the Apennine Stream. It was designed to make it difficult or prevent the penetration of larger military units towards Italy. The thesis discusses the passability of the areas where the barriers were located, an overview of events related to the system, and an overview of individual barriers based on archaeological research.
