This thesis presents Hieronymus Megiser, his time and his work, with a detailed examination of his Dictionary of Four Languages (Dictionarium quatuor linguarum). First, we focus on the time or period (the early modern age or the long 16th century) in which this polymath and linguist lived. Since he spent a significant part of his life in the service of the estates, we delve into the emergence of the provinces and present the role of the estates and provincial law during the transition from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. He lived in a period of many changes, which were also visible in the social order and culture, so we will also say a few words about the three orders of the world, humanism, and science. This is followed by a detailed presentation of the life from birth to death and the work of Hieronymus Megiser. Since his works represent an important basic for Slovenian lexicography, we try to show his presence to this day through a presentation of the entire lexicography in Slovenia. We observe and compare the prevalence of Slovenian headwords under the letters a and b, recorded in the reverse dictionary of four languages by Annelies Lägreid, with the vocabulary of later periods, namely Janez Svetokriški, the vocabulary from the reverse Slovenian-Latin dictionary (Kastelec-Vorenc), Pleteršnik's dictionary and the Dictionary of Slovenian Literary Language.
