The master’s thesis examines the correspondence between Rainer Maria Rilke and Franz Xaver Kappus. The first part provides theoretical foundations regarding the nature of translation and various translation strategies, as well as key contextual information about this correspondence. The thesis then analyzes selected passages from Kajetan Kovič’s Slovene translation of Rilke’s letters, first published as an appendix to the edition of his selected poetry in the series Lirika (Mladinska knjiga, 1988) and later under the title Pisma mlademu pesniku; Pisma mladi ženski (Študentska založba, 2006). The final part consists of my own translations of Kappus’s letters, which had not previously been translated into Slovene, accompanied by commentary in which I analyze and justify certain translation choices.
