The master’s thesis, submitted at the conclusion of studies at the Department of Sacred Music at the Academy of Music, University of Ljubljana, consists of three parts: the master’s concert, the written thesis, and the defense of both the written thesis and the concert. The written thesis includes analyses of the compositions performed at the master’s concert, as well as a presentation and analysis of the candidate’s own composition. The thematic thread of the concert is angels. The program features compositions from various stylistic periods and traditions, all based on biblical and liturgical texts that mention angels or are spoken by them. The analyses are multi-layered, encompassing theological, textual, historical, structural, and harmonic aspects. Each composition is introduced with information about the composer, the circumstances of its creation, a textual analysis, and a musical examination. Special attention is given to the connection between musical elements and the text, as well as the liturgical function of each piece. The aim of these analyses is a deeper understanding of the works, in order to achieve a more holistic and convincing interpretation. Half of the selected repertoire consists of Gregorian chant. The other half features polyphonic choral works from later periods, which complement the concert’s thematic focus with their stylistic and spiritual richness. The original composition follows the same conceptual direction and is subjected to equally in-depth analysis. The thesis as a whole reflects the competencies acquired during the study of Sacred music and demonstrates the integration of theoretical knowledge, artistic creativity, and performance practice.
