The rule of law is a fundamental EU value, respect for which is key to trust between member states and the functioning of the acquis. The aim of this thesis is to determine how effectively Slovenia complies with the European benchmarks, to highlight key challenges and propose possible solutions. The work contributes to a better understanding and improvement of the rule of law in Slovenia and the EU. The reasons for the research stem from the efforts to improve the rule of law and the fact that the chosen topic is relevant due to the current situation in the EU, where there is an increasing need to ensure compliance with the rule of law. The aim is to contribute to better functioning of the rule of law in Slovenia and in the EU. The research is based on a qualitative approach. Descriptive, analytical, empirical and deductive methods are used. These allow for the description and understanding of the concept of the rule of law, the analysis of the European mechanisms and the situation in Slovenia, and the drawing of conclusions based on legislation, documents and practices. The methodological framework ensures the comprehensiveness of the analysis and the formulation of proposals for improvement. Despite the wide range of EU mechanisms to ensure the rule of law, they have been found to be largely ineffective and inadequate. As regards the state of the rule of law in Slovenia, despite some positive developments, challenges and major shortcomings remain and are being addressed slowly.
