The aim of this thesis is to explore the way people faced the challenges of living next to volatile waters of Savinja and its tributaries. Throughout history, the attitude of these people changed from generally adapting to the natural context in which they were living and minimising their vulnerability, to the belief that the nature of the river Savinja and its tributaries can be changed, tamed and along with the areas, reserved by the river, be economically or otherwise exploited. The increasing destructive power and the consequent record-breaking devastation brought about by essentially every new flood in the twentieth century, gave rise to a paradigmatic shift in the way we deal with the river, as well as new approaches to flood protection at the turn of the century. Despite at least an abandonment in principle of the idea that the useless flood plain is a thing of the past, some believe that the new way of flood protection isn't an inadequate solution for solving water management problems in the Savinja basin. However, despite warnings, some behavioural patterns remain the same even considering the floods of 2023.
