The main focus of the master's thesis was the proper execution of the shoot, and how to present these photographs through a fashion zine, so that they work cohesively and tell an imaginary story.
The theoretical part explored what night fashion photography is (how it has evolved, from art to night photography), how fashion photography is divided. After an overview of this, an overview of the photographers who have worked in the field of night fashion photography followed. For the last two parts of the theoretical part, the focus was mainly on the technical part (what is needed for night photography in general, a description of the main three components to consider in photography and how to implement them in night fashion photography, a brief overview of cameras and lenses, as well as flashes and studio lights). Finally, the thesis touches upon post-production, which is very important in fashion photography (the overview was based on existing software that can be used for photo editing).
The experimental part focused on the creation of an original fashion zine, in which different personalities, stylisations and moods were portrayed in the context of one night through three characters inspired by the Gossip Girl series. The photographs used belonged to the artist and were taken in an outdoor urban night environment and indoors, using a digital camera, flash (in manual mode with distance setting), and photo editing and zine design software (Adobe Lightroom and Adobe InDesign). The story was based on a dramatic triangle (arrival - party - afterparty), with the photographs arranged to highlight the transitions in mood and variety of the evening. Special attention was also paid to the black and white post production, which was used to create a peak of drama in the story.
Throughout the process we saw how important every little detail contributes to the design (from the elements in the photograph, their placement in the zine, the accompanying text).
