This thesis presents a performance analysis of programmable logic controllers (PLKs) embedded in frequency converters produced by ABB and Danfoss. In recent years, frequency converters have evolved beyond simple motor speed controllers. Modern units often include integrated PLK functionality, enabling the execution of basic control logic directly within the device. This reduces the need for external hardware, decreases overall system costs, and simplifies implementation in industrial environments.
The main goal of the thesis is to compare the programming approaches of the two manufacturers - Danfoss with its Smart Logic Control (SLC) system and ABB with its Adaptive programming platform. The study focuses on differences in user interfaces, programming complexity, flexibility, responsiveness, and overall suitability for various industrial applications. Additional emphasis is placed on user experience and learning curve, which are crucial factors in practical use.
The experimental part of the thesis includes an analysis of technical documentation and a hands-on evaluation using the Drive Composer software (ABB) and the MCT 10 tool (Danfoss). A basic control sequence was implemented in both systems to assess programming workflow, available functionality, ease of use, and execution performance. More advanced features such as conditional logic, timers, and peripheral device integration were also tested.
The results show that both platforms are capable of handling standard automation tasks efficiently, but they differ in their design philosophy. ABB provides more flexibility and support for complex process control, whereas Danfoss offers a simpler and more intuitive solution for basic tasks. Based on the findings, the thesis provides practical recommendations for selecting the appropriate system according to the application's complexity, the user's experience level, and project requirements.
This work contributes to a better understanding of the embedded programming capabilities in modern frequency converters and supports industrial users in making informed decisions when choosing between ABB and Danfoss solutions.
