Introduction: Understanding the differences between expectations and experiences of vaginal birth is crucial for providing high-quality midwifery care. Expectations are influenced by prenatal education, birth stories, media, and support from close ones. The gap between expectations and actual experience is based on a woman’s perception of childbirth. A positive outcome, a sense of safety, and support from loved ones and healthcare professionals significantly shape the birth experience. Healthcare professionals, especially midwives, contribute significantly to the development of realistic expectations by providing information, particularly among first-time mothers. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to present the differences between women’s expectations and their experiences of vaginal birth. The purpose is also to identif the factors contributing to satisfaction or dissatisfaction with the birth experience among primiparous mothers, and to evaluate the importance of social influences on the perception and outcomes of childbirth, and to explore potential improvements in midwifery care during the prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum periods. Methods: In the first part of the thesis, a descriptive method was used to analyze the existing professional and scientific literature in both Slovenian and English, which was searched using performed the DiKul meta-search engine and the PubMed, Cobiss, and Science Direct databases. In the second, empirical part, a qualitative research method was used. Interviews were conducted with women who met the inclusion criteria, in order to gain insight into their expectations and experiences of vaginal birth and to identify possible differences between them. Results: The study included 10 women who met the following inclusion criteria: at least 18 years of age, a history of a single vaginal birth that occurred between 6 weeks and 1 year prior to the study, and gestational age of the newborn at birth between 37 and 42 weeks of pregnancy. Discussion and conclusion: To improve the experience of childbirth, it is important to provide high-quality, professional, and timely information to expectant mothers and to promotee open and respectful communication between healthcare providers and women in labour. In this way, the gap between expectations and reality is reduced and more comprehensive and higher-quality care is given to the women.
