The quality of life depends on how an individual spends their free time. It is important to be aware of the consequences of inappropriate leisure activities among children and adolescents on their physical well-being, mental health, cognitive abilities, development of social skills, and the growth of empathy. The purpose of the master's thesis was to examine primary school students’ perspectives on the importance of spending free time in the company of animals. A total of 207 primary school students participated in the survey. The results showed that the surveyed students are aware of the connection between how free time is spent and one’s health. 54.1% of students stated that they have a pet, and among those who do not, the majority expressed a desire to have one. The most common pets are dogs and cats. The students agreed that spending free time with animals brings feelings of happiness, improves well-being, provides relaxation, reduces stress, contributes to the development of empathy and responsibility, and helps to overcome loneliness. Among the disadvantages of spending time with animals, they highlighted the sadness caused by the loss of a pet. The results also showed that students who have a pet express a greater appreciation for living beings and environmental protection compared to those without pets.
