The topic of this master’s thesis is the revitalization of the degraded location of the old cooperative winery in Umag as a space for renewed dialogue between the historical and contemporary Istrian wine culture. Today, the existing cellar complex stands abandoned and forgotten, although it once represented a key economic force — a symbol of innovation and the new momentum behind the wine story of Umag and the broader. In today’s context of mass tourism and youth migration, we face a lack of interest, knowledge, skills, and above all, affection for the region. This is reflected both in the ruins and in the hectares of abandoned Istrian vineyards.
The purpose of the thesis is to highlight the richness and quality of the Istrian terroir and the potential carried by the existing winery. The goal is to propose a program and architectural solution that would enable the reestablishment of an active Istrian wine community. The proposed wine center is designed as an open space — a piazza or square — where educational, research, cultural, and gastronomic activities intertwine, creating a place for winemakers, researchers, and curious wine lovers. Within the old stone walls, the introduction of a new program of a wine academy, museum, and enoteca offers a complete wine experience — knowledge, story, conversation, and taste.
