Our time is limited, and within that, work is a significant part of our lives, occupying most of our days, every day, for decades. Since it plays such an essential role in our lives, it is crucial to examine how much we work and what this says about our lifestyle and the community we live in. The 40-hour workweek originates from the 19th century. Since then, circumstances have changed dramatically: access to vast amounts of information has reshaped our perspective on life and work. The concept of shorter working hours has been a topic of discussion for a long time, but the question remains how feasible this idea is and how many organizations are genuinely ready to adopt such a work model. Companies seek greater productivity at lower costs, while employees increasingly express a need for better work-life balance. Some companies abroad and in Slovenia have already implemented shorter working hours. In my master’s thesis, I will explore the impact of shorter working hours from both an organizational and an individual perspective, as well as examine its effect on the balance between work and personal life.
