The purpose of the master’s thesis is to research views of young adults on feminism, sexism and gender equality. In the theoretical introduction I defined the concept of gender (in)equality, where I described gender stereotypes and explained the meaning of gender equality. In the following section I defined the concept of sexism and focused on different aspects of life where sexism is present. In this part, I mostly focused on sexism which affects the lives of women, but I did touch on sexism which affects men or rather how society harms men, at the end of the chapter. In the last chapter, I talked about feminism, where I focused on different waves of feminism, with the focus on how feminism developed in Slovenia. I briefly touched on different types of feminism and gave a few examples of how the media talks about feminism in Slovenia. I chose this topic because I came across a lot of sexist remarks and beliefs in my personal life, at the same time I also noticed a lot of negative opinions of feminism. This motivated me to research the opinions and views of young adults regarding previously mentioned topics. I find this topic important, because I believe it is crucial to understand the trends that are present in our society. I believe it is our role, as social workers, to recognize sexism and work towards reducing it, if not eliminating it altogether. I find this to be a crucial part of social work because our purpose states that we, as social workers, advocate for human rights and the equality before the law. At the same time, I believe we have to advocate for equality in our society and not just equality before the law. I conducted a quantitative, descriptive, and empirical study, which involved 193 young adults who were living in Slovenia at the time of the research. The majority of participants were women, with a slightly smaller group of men, only a few of participants identified as non-binary or chose not to disclose their gender identity. The results of the study often showed a difference between the general analysis, in which women's opinions often dominated over the opinions of men, and the analysis based on gender, which more accurately highlighted the differences in the views of men and women, and with that provided a better understanding of the true opinions of young adults. I found that most men do not understand the concept of feminism according to its definition, while most women do. Women more often agreed with the statement that feminism is important for achieving gender equality, while men were more divided on the matter. A majority of women also identified as feminists, while just under a quarter of men identified as feminists. The results of the study show that there is a connection between gender and positive evaluation of feminism, as women tend to see feminism more positively. I also discovered that young adults, on average, recognize the importance of gender equality, and that there is a connection between gender and young adults' opinions on the importance of gender equality. Through research, I found that men have more sexist beliefs compared to women. I also observed that younger men have more sexist beliefs compared to women, regardless of age and compared to older men. Finally, I provided some suggestions, among which I would highlight the need for research that more comprehensively and extensively explores the experience of sexism and feminism, further investigates men's issues, and focuses on understanding the definition of "a real man”. I also suggest the importance of spreading awareness about feminism and sexism, as these issues are still present in our society. I also believe it is crucial to address gender equality during primary education and work on dismantling gender stereotypes within the educational system.
