At the beginning of my final thesis for the Bachelor's degree in Slovene Studies, I first address
the issue of miscarriage and the rise in infertility from a sociological perspective: What are the
causes of the rise in infertility in contemporary society? What are the negative consequences
on the psychological health of those affected? What strategies should global politics take in the
near future to rehabilitate the social system?
I continue with the literary part, in which I first explore the development of the Slovenian and
Australian contemporary novel, and how the themes of infertility and miscarriage are reflected
in a few examples of contemporary novels, of Slovenian and Australian origin (Materinska
knjižica (2022), Pričakovanja (2023) and The Light Between Oceans (2012)). The main part
of my thesis is a detailed literary analysis of a Slovenian contemporary novel, Pričakovanja by
Anja Mugerli, and an Australian contemporary novel, The Light Between Oceans by M. L.
Stedman. The analysis of these two novels is followed by a literary comparison. In the appendix
of my thesis, I enclose a transcript of my interview with Anja Mugerli.
