This work analyzes the narrative techniques –specifically, character autonomy, the blurred relationship between reality and fiction, and metafiction– used by Miguel de Unamuno and Luigi Pirandello in Niebla and Sei personaggi in cerca d’autore. The first section presents both authors, their poetics, and the two literary texts studied. It then summarizes the historical and cultural context in which they were writing and compares their philosophies and artistic aims. A theoretical overview of the literary character is also included, serving as a foundation to analyze the development of the autonomous character in both works, while also considering the influence of Miguel de Cervantes. Finally, the study explores the authors’ techniques for blurring the lines between reality and fiction, which, in their literary approach, culminates in metafiction.
