When working with people in mental distress, the professional staff often encounters people who have had traumatic experiences. However, experts in the field of psychosocial assistance are often not suitably professionally qualified to offer them appropriate help. In the theoretical part of the master's thesis, we presented modern findings on understanding traumatic experiences. We defined the concept of trauma and offered guidelines for the work in this field, which are based on modern findings, supported by neuroscience. We further presented the creative arts therapies and then the expressive arts therapy approach, which also uses non-verbal techniques and thus offers therapeutic support that is in line with modern guidelines for resolving trauma.
Since there is not much professional literature and research in the field of creative arts therapies as an effective approach to treating trauma, and we do not find such research in our country, we offered, in the empirical part, an overview of research in the form of a systematic theoretical review. A systematic theoretical review provided results that confirmed the effectiveness of creative arts therapies in trauma processing. We also identified the principles of expressive arts therapy, which effectively cooperate in processing traumatic experiences. We have also developed a set of recommendations that professionals can incorporate into existing practice.
