The thesis presents Sophocles’ tragedy Antigone and its five translations into Slovenian. The theoretical part defines ancient Greek tragedy and presents an over-view of development, from the earliest recorded mention of Antigone in literature to today’s most recent translation. The practical part follows with a linguistic analysis of verses 376–581, translated by Cvetko Golar, Fran Albrecht, Ivan Hribovšek, Anton Sovre, and Kajetan Gantar. The translations are compared with each other and with the original with emphasis on morphology, lexicology, phraseology, and syntax, as well as the similarities and differences on each level and the solutions that translators adopted when accurate translation was not possible. Finally, the thesis analyses the different ways of translating Greek proper names.
