With rapid technological development and an ever more informed consumers, the cosmetic industry is constantly adapting and inventing new products. Research and innovation in cosmetology not only improves product quality, but also highlights sustainable practices that will shape the future of the industry. Cosmetology remains a dynamic field that combines science, sustainability and aesthetics to respond to the complex needs of consumers.
In the thesis, we have analysed current areas in cosmetology by searching and studying scientific publications of the past five years published in impact factor journals using the PubMed® database. The predominant topics in these publications included peptides, skin microbiota and cosmetics linked to the environment. Peptides, as one of the most important bioactive compounds, are becoming increasingly popular in view of their broad functionality. They have shown effects in mature skin care, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity, and can also act as antioxidants and moisturising agents. Scientific publications on peptides have focused mainly on the care of aging and acne-prone skin with intensified research into methods to enhance their dermal absorption efficiency. Scientific studies on the skin microbiota emphasise the importance of the balance among microorganisms on the skin, leading to the development of cosmetic products with probiotics, prebiotics and postbiotics. Their applications are particularly emphasised in supportive care for skin conditions such as acne, disrupted skin barriers, atopic dermatitis, etc. The microbiota is essential for maintaining the normal functions of the skin and its protective barrier. On the other hand, alongside the development of new formulations, cosmetology is increasingly turning toward nature. The reduction of the use of microplastics, the development of recyclable packaging and the use of natural materials have become key objectives of the cosmetic industry. Companies are focusing on reducing their carbon footprint, the negative impact on aquatic environments and the implementation of renewable resources in their processes for the development and production of cosmetic products. Such efforts not only ensure a positive impact on the environment, but also build consumer trust.
