The theoretical part of the master's thesis discusses human cognition and its functions, especially those related to visual perception, recognition, thinking and recalling. These are prerequisites for the development of an individual's visual literacy skills. Two existing models that systematize visual literacy are described. The roles of visual language and visual images of pictures within the field of visual literacy are highlighted and applied to the visual medium of picturebooks. The practical part is devoted to a small collection of folk songs from the Croatian seaside. The content is discussed through the history of the geographical area and its influence on the development of coastal folk literature. The content is discussed through illustrations, typography, materials and the design of the book. The process of making illustrations is analysed within their two-level nature. The final product of the practical work is an illustrated book-object, a picturebook with the title Praise the sea, keep at bay.
