In this master’s thesis, the author wanted to discover how young adults understand personal meaning and identify the main aspects they associate with it. The research consisted of nine participants between the ages of 25 and 35. The author analysed the semi-structured interviews using the grounded theory method and classified the results into seven main categories: the concept of personal meaning, what can be considered as personal meaning, pathways to discover personal meaning, asking questions regarding the personal meaning, realizing personal meaning, positive effects of personal meaning when it exists and negative effects in the absence of it. In the final part of the assignment, the author compared the relationships within the main categories and connected them with the findings of other authors.
Personal meaning is a broad concept representing a global construct combining abstract characteristics. It is hierarchically organized. On the one hand, it is understood as a general or umbrella concept, and on the other hand, as a specific one. It can be dynamic or constant and relates to the rational, emotional, and intuitive levels and concepts such as mission, vocation, spirituality, and personal identity.
When it comes to personal meaning, there are different dynamics, ways, and reasons for finding it. The search is influenced by both external and internal factors, which can either support the individual or present obstacles. The presence of personal meaning is associated with positive feelings, positive qualities, a positive attitude towards others and life, internal motivation, and orientation. In contrast, the absence of personal meaning is associated with negative feelings, a negative attitude towards oneself, others, and life, as well as the absence of internal motivation and orientation.
This master’s thesis provides insight into the understanding of personal meaning among young adults and highlights the fundamental aspects they associate with it. The study results are beneficial in working with young adults, for whom personal meaning is essential in the period of independence and discovering one’s path.
