Atopic dermatitis is a chronic, recurrent inflammatory disease. In today's world, it is one of the most common skin conditions, affecting 15 to 20 % of children and 1 to 3 % of adults worldwide. In the last 30 years, the incidence has tripled. Several factors contribute to the development of the disease, such as genetics, environmental pollution, temperature, humidity, diet. To control skin diseases, it is crucial to avoid factors that worsen symptoms and educate patients, as this can prolong the disease's remission phase. In addition to avoiding triggers, regular skin care practices such as bathing, washing, and using emollients can help control symptoms and extend the remission phase of the disease. The most common treatment involves the use of topical corticosteroids.
The purpose of this thesis was to review clinical studies examining the effectiveness of plant extracts, butters and oils in treating or alleviating the symptoms of atopic dermatitis. We found that there are several plant-based preparations that contribute to improving the symptoms of atopic dermatitis. After reviewing seventeen studies on plant extracts and seven oils and butters, we found that eleven plant extracts have a positive effect on the skin, including extracts of Echinacea, tea tree, dodder, eucalyptus, licorice root, common mallow, coriander, Oregon grape, oats and St. John’s wort. Similarly, all seven oils and butters, borage oil, coconut oil, shea butter, olive oil, black cumin oil, sunflower oil and evening primrose oil, also showed beneficial effects on the skin.
