The paper offers some preliminary observations on the usefulnes of grammars and dictionaries. If they are to be of practical benefit to their users, two conditions have to be met: grammars and dictionaries must be user-centred and user-differentiated, and they have to reflect the linguistic reality. To ensure that this reality will be dealt with, it is necessary to take into account representative source material on the one hand and the results of relevant linguistic research on the other. Some suggestions are made as to how to enhance the usefulness of grammars and dictionaries, concerning for instance the collaboration between mono- and bilingual lexicographers and in general between Slovene language specialists and linguists studying other languages.
