The aim of the master’s thesis is to connect the largest national airport with the railway and in this way to enable sustainable travel for Slovenian citizens as well as tourists.
Railways appeared in Slovenia for the first time in 1848, when the first train on the route of the Southern Railway, a project that connected the Habsburg Monarchy with Trieste, the country’s main sea port, reached Maribor.
The railway, and with it passenger traffic, gradually developed until the 1970s, when the last lines were built. Since then, we have not managed to build a single new line in the independent country, with the exception of the second line from Divača to Koper, which is still under construction. In recent years, investments have been reinvested in upgrading railway services as well as designing broader passenger and logistics strategies, which place new lines in the area and thus shorten the distances for passengers and cargo.
In the past, there was often a push to connect the airport in Brnik, following the example of all major and minor airports in Europe, with a type of rail infrastructure. This would allow the airport to further develop and at the same time expand the coverage of regional Ljubljana routes for greater connectivity with the center of the capital.
Through historical analysis, examples of good practices in Europe and the existing state of the airport infrastructure at the Brno airport, I placed a new railway station in the space, as a regional modal intersection in the northwestern part of the country, which upgrades the wider passenger area with accommodation activity for a shorter period of time.
