The master's thesis deals with the renovation of the abandoned Tovarna volnenih izdelkov "Bača" (TVI "Bača"). It explores a programme that would rejuvenate the closer area of now degraded factory site and Podbrdo, while at the same time encouraging the revitalisation of entire Baška grapa and the wider region of Posočje and Rovtarsko.
Today the area is facing population ageing, depopulation and the abandonment of traditional activities, which are leading to rapid forest encroachment. This is leading to a loss of the former diverse habitat composition and, as a consequence, to a decline in the biodiversity that is so characteristic of the area. The potential of the task is identified in sheep farming, which is traditional for this area that is characterised by steep slopes. Sheep wool is a waste product, most of which is nowadays improperly disposed and can pose a risk to nature.
The task therefore restores a factory in the abandoned factory buildings, this time it's a wool scouring mill and waste upgrade facility. In addition to clean wool, the factory's products include lanolin, fertiliser pellets and dehydrated sludge. Transport is linked to the existing Bohinj railway, which is connected to the factory by a new industrial track. The programme serves as a lever for the renewal of agriculture for smallholder livestock farmers in the wider region and the generational renewal of the countryside, it creates job opportunities in the local area.
The new factory, despite the relocation of industry to the area, provides space for residents and visitors once again. The concept emphasises the greatest qualities of the area and showcases the historical layers of the complex. Thus, the Italian barracks and some of the industrial buildings are revealed under the numerous extensions. The space is integrated into the network of existing paths and new links are established. The factory becomes an active co-creator of the village space, restoring its identity and offering users an insight into the technological process.
